Don't be fooled by:

  • Surplus - Should you be paying full price when the surplus house acquired product of unknown origins for pennies on the dollar?  Surplus products, specifically bearings, are usually purchased from an OEM or plant when a machine is obsoleted, a line shuts down, or the company closes.  Manufacturers usually recommend storing bearings for <5 years; surplus houses may stock bearings that are 20 years old and spray with oil before shipping to give the appearance of "new".  Surplus houses will often sell surplus, their own brand of private label bearings, and sometimes authentic bearings - how do you know what you are getting?
  • Reconditioned or Remanufactured - Beware of the "fluff and buff".  Reconditoned products have been removed from operation under load and reclaimed or refurbished to look like new product.  While reconditioning has it's place under the appropriate conditions (extending service life, sustainable manufacturing, shorter lead time), it can change operating conditions of components and reduce machine performance.  Bearings can be hand polished, have new balls or rollers manufactured, cages welded, raceways ground, features added.  Substandard reconditioned components may be the weak link that leads to catastrophic failure - but how could anyone tell it was remanufactured?
  • Counterfeit or "Knock Off" - Last but not least is the classic "fake".  Fake markings.  Illegal use of brand names.  You've heard of knock off hand bags and sunglasses, but what about industrial components that requires high reliability and operator safety?  It's not difficult to make something look like a bearing, but having it perform like a manufacturer authentic product is.  Manufacturers have developed loyal, educated customers over years of delivering products that work in tough applications.  Counterfeiters steal this brand equity by delivering low quality product with the unauthorized use of manufacturer logos, marking, and packaging.  The package looks authentic - but what if it's been copied?

National, regional, and local authorized distributors may be selling you any combination of these risky classes.  Manufacturers do not require authorized distributors to inform customers when products are procured outside of the standard supply chain.

It's your reputation.  It's your machine availability.  It's your call.  Authentic product from the most trusted global manufacturers doesn't have to be expensive.  It doesn't have to be back ordered for months.
