Know It All: N and NN Super Precision Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Super Precision Cylindrical Roller Bearings of series N10xx and N30xx are top of the line rolling bearings known for runout control, rigidity, and high load ratings. Top manufacturers include SKF, Schaeffler FAG, NSK, and NTN.  The non-locating design makes these bearings ideal for float (expansion) positions and are usually paired with high contact angle axial thrust ball bearings like Schaeffler FAG’s double direction 2344 series or a pair of single row bearings in main spindles, threading machines, printing machines, and other machine tool.

QOTD: Can I Use a Ball Bearing to Support my Ball Screw?

Can I Use a Ball Bearing to Support my Ball Screw? You can, but let’s make sure the correct ball bearing is specified and sourced.  Ball screw ends are either fixed, supported, or free.

  1. Fixed: axially located, designed to handle axial loads in both directions
  2. Supported: axially non-located, design to support radial loads and radial stiffness
  3. Free: non-located, unsupported, cantilevered screw - generally not recommended. Drastic reduction in stability, strength, and stiffness.
